Get ready for the sudden urge to give your home a refresh because Behr announced Blank Canvas (DC-003) as its Color of the Year for 2023. Part of the paint company’s new designer collection, the warm white works with practically any design style while embracing wellness and comfort.
“White is the key to individual style simply because it’s so easy to change up,” says Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr. “It’s really simple to bring in other colors, textures, patterns, and materials to individualize this color.”
A few years ago, the interior space was oversaturated with certain styles like farmhouse, according to Sarah Fishburne, The Home Depot’s director of trend and design. Now, people are updating and mixing their own lifestyle trends. “We're seeing a resurgence of opulence and all these different eras coming in and people trying to find their signature, but not necessarily be put into [a single] style bucket,” Fishburne tells House Beautiful. “Modern organic is being mixed in with traditional elements [when the two] always kind of sat separate—and what you need to pull it all together is a beautiful blank canvas.”
No matter what design you gravitate toward, Behr’s Blank Canvas acts as a timeless neutral. You can incorporate it into your home through kitchen cabinets, large furniture pieces, the walls of an at-home yoga studio, or even your home’s exterior. Woelfel recommends layering the color with “creamy ivories, beiges, biscuits, and lattes.” Black can offer a dramatic contrast, and nature-based blues, like Behr’s Adirondack Blue, and greens can help bring the calming effect of the outdoors into your home.
“Blank Canvas is very inspiring but also super attainable,” adds Jodi Allen, global chief marketing officer at Behr. “It gives people the confidence that they can recreate something like this in a nice, easy, attainable way.”
To celebrate the color, Behr is hosting a giveaway that includes a grand prize of $10,000 and a design consultation with HGTV stars Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent. They’ll help the winner create their own soothing oasis at home. "Design and wellness are intertwined in so many ways," says Berkus. "Blank Canvas is the perfect shade to elevate your at-home self-care space."
