Jul. 27—BROADWAY — The Broadway Board of Commissioners voted Monday to contract with Southern Corrosion Inc. to provide yearly inspections of the town's water tank.

The tank inspection issue came up earlier this year when Mayor Donald Andrews said such a program was needed, but no funding had been included in the 2021-22 budget.

The inspections are needed due to the age of the iconic tank on Main Street that was built in the mid-1960s.

The agreement approved Monday calls for a visual inspection each year for any needed maintenance or repairs, Andrews said.

The interior of the tank will be washed out in the first and sixth years of the agreement to get rid of accumulated sediment, he said.

"The interior walls and floor will be cleaned. Any rusted surfaces on the interior will be repaired and sealed," Andrews said. "The tank interior will then be disinfected."

In the sixth year, the exterior of the tank will be pressure washed and any spots or areas of rust will be repaired and sealed before two coats of acrylic paint are applied.

The inside of the tank was last cleaned in 2016 and the exterior cleaned in 2018.

The initial fee, under the terms of the agreement, will be $13,500. The rate will be set each year by Southern Corrosion based on the consumer price index.

Funding for the work is coming from the Contracted Services are of the Waste/Wastewater Enterprise Fund, Andrews said.

U.S. farm equipment maker Deere & Co will be moving production of mower conditioners, which are tractor attachments with rolling discs to cut and crush hay, from a factory in Ottumwa, Iowa, to an existing plant in Mexico over the next 18 months, the company said. The company told Reuters late on Thursday the number of employees impacted by the move from the Iowa plant would depend on several factors, but that around 80 worked on the mower-conditioner production line with support from 10 salaried employees. The plant in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey already makes "hay and forage" attachments, according to a John Deere spokesman, and the move was motivated by the desire to make all of the equipment in that category in the same place.
