This type of insulation material consists of fine glass fibers. It is one of the most common insulation materials. Fiberglass insulation is commonly used in blankets, loose-fill, rigid board, and duct insulation. This type of insulation material is made from molten glass. The glass is blown into fibers. Many manufacturers use between 40% to 80% recycled glass content. There are various variations of fiberglass ll with high R-values. This type of insulation is ideal for post-construction. It is great for crawl spaces, attics, basements, and other small areas that can significantly influence a home’s heat loss or retention.

There are two types of mineral wool insulation material. The first one is rock wool, an artificial material made of natural minerals such as basalt. The second one is slag wool, an artificial material made from blast furnace slag. Blast furnace slag is a waste matter that usually forms on the surface of molten metal. Mineral wool contains about 75% recycled material. However, it does not require added chemicals for fire resistance. Mineral wool is commonly used to make loose-fill and blanket insulation.

This insulation material is made from recycled paper, newsprints, and other highly recycled materials. The recycled paper is usually reduced to small pieces. It is then fiberized to create a product that can pack securely into building cavities. Most cellulose manufacturers usually add mineral borate blended with affordable ammonium sulfate. This combination makes it fire and insect-resistant. Cellulose insulation material is commonly used in new and old buildings. This type of insulation material can be damp-sprayed or dry-installed.

This transparent thermoplastic is often used to make beadboard, concrete block, and foam board insulation. The polystyrene is usually molded and expanded to create foam board insulation. There are also small polystyrene beads commonly used as pouring insulation. This type of insulation material is extremely lightweight. The material’s thermal resistance usually depends on its density.

This is thermoset insulation material. It contains a low-conductivity gas within its cells. Polyurethane insulation material is available in two formulas. The first one is the closed-cell formula which is usually high-density, closed, and filled with gas. This helps the foam expand and fill up the spaces where it is installed. The second one is the open-cell formula which is less dense. When it is filled with air, it gains a spongy texture. Additionally, it has a lower R-value than the closed-cell formula.

This insulation material is composed of natural fibers like cotton, flax, hemp, and wool. Natural fiber insulation materials are also commonly made from recyclable materials like denim. These materials are typically more environmentally friendly. Natural fibers are processed to make rigid and semi-rigid foam boards that restrict heat flow. The materials vary in stiffness, depending on their raw material and intended use. They are also healthier because they do not contain HCFCs, fiberglass, asbestos, CFCs, and other chemicals. The downside of natural fiber insulation is that it is not fire retardant. Therefore, it has to be treated with other materials to make it fire retardant.

This is one of the oldest insulation materials. It was invented in the 80s in response to the energy crisis. Phenolic foam is applied in areas that need higher insulation rates, like roofs. Phenolic insulation foam is great for air conditioning basements and external, roof, equipment, or tunnel insulation. They are also used in ceilings and foundations. This insulation material is also great for decoration, thanks to its aesthetic appeal. Phenolic foam insulation is usually manufactured by sandwiching plastic foam between two flexible tissue-faced layers. It contains phenolic resin and other additives. The downside with phenolic foam material is that it has limited availability, especially as board insulation.

When choosing the right insulation material type, it would help to consider their qualities, specific application areas and sustainability of the building materials . The thermal resistance values of the materials are also worth considering. For instance, materials with higher thermal resistance values are great for areas with high insulation demands, like roofs and ceilings. On the other hand, for less demanding spaces, materials with medium thermal resistance would do the trick.
