CROSSLAKE — Experimental boaters hit the water Saturday, Aug. 13, at Moonlite Bay in Crosslake in an attempt to race their homemade cardboard boats against other corrugated shipwrights.

The 11th annual event featured various races, including adult and kid races.

Participants were only a thin layer of shipping material from sinking. Their boats had to meet certain construction restrictions. Boats could only be built of unfaced cardboard of any thickness, with Moonlite Bay providing standard 2-ply cardboard and paper tape.

Layers could be combined with waterproof wood glue. Seams could be sealed with water based caulk. Boats were permitted to have two or more coats of latex, exterior house paint and a water based polyurethane finish. Decorations were allowed so long as they did not impact boat performance or water tightness.

Builders were not permitted the use of expoxy, roofing cement, plastic tapes, floa\tation materials, rubberized materials, finished box board or flex seal.
